Specialized Investigations Division (SID) detectives have arrested a 19-year-old man from Alabama for allegedly spray-painting swastikas and hate messages on five homes in Nashville’s Sylvan Park area. The incident occurred in the early morning hours of March 19, 2023.
The suspect, identified by name at the end of 2023, was 17 years old at the time of the vandalism. Juvenile Court arrest orders were issued for him. SID detectives received information that the 19-year-old would likely be attending a concert event in the Madison area. He was spotted and taken into custody without incident.
The suspect faces multiple charges, including five counts of vandalism, five counts of engaging in a criminal conspiracy, five counts of criminal trespassing, five counts of civil rights intimidation, and one count of theft.
The vandalism took place at homes on Westlawn Drive, as well as Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, and Idaho Avenues. Surveillance video from one of the homes, released by the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD) on March 19, 2023, shows two masked men approaching the porch and spray-painting over the camera lens before defacing the property with hate messages and stealing a Colombian flag.
In response to the incident, Chief John Drake ordered an enhanced police presence in the Sylvan Park area to address the hate message vandalism.
