Tennessee Funds Rural Healthcare Workforce Development

Tennessee grants $10.7 million to enhance rural healthcare workforce.

The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development (TDLWD) has announced a significant investment in rural healthcare, with $10.7 million in grant funding aimed at strengthening healthcare workforce development across the state. Starting July 1, 2025, a total of 38 organizations throughout Tennessee will receive these funds to support healthcare initiatives in every rural county.

The funding is part of the Rural Healthcare Initiatives Program, which focuses on improving healthcare services in 91 of Tennessee’s 95 counties that are classified as non-metropolitan. The program’s goal is to expand the state’s healthcare workforce by utilizing existing training structures and increasing apprenticeship opportunities. This investment intends to ensure that rural communities have access to skilled healthcare professionals, thereby enhancing the quality and availability of care throughout the state.

TDLWD Commissioner Deniece Thomas emphasized the importance of the program, stating, “The Rural Healthcare Initiatives Program is a critical step toward building a sustainable healthcare workforce in Tennessee’s rural areas.” The initiative provides financial resources to support training, certifications, and apprenticeships.

The financial support from the program will be directed to sponsoring entities that will facilitate training programs, certification courses, and apprenticeships. The grant also aims to address ancillary costs, such as transportation, childcare, and examination fees, which often hinder workforce entry and advancement.

Commissioner Thomas further explained, “Our goal is to remove barriers and create opportunities for individuals to enter and excel in healthcare careers in Tennessee’s rural communities.” The initiative underscores the importance of healthcare access in rural areas of the state.

In support of this initiative, Gov. Bill Lee has proposed a second year of funding for the program in the 2025–2026 fiscal year budget. This commitment highlights the administration’s dedication to enhancing training opportunities and expanding employment options in rural Tennessee.
