Smyrna Man Receives 20-Year Sentence for Child Exploitation

Smyrna resident sentenced to 20 years for child exploitation and pornography distribution.

Peter Allen Snyder, a 43-year-old resident of Smyrna, Tennessee, was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to charges of sexual exploitation of a minor and distribution of child pornography. The sentencing was announced by Robert E. McGuire, Acting United States Attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee.

Snyder will also be required to register as a sex offender. Robert E. McGuire emphasized the priority of aggressively prosecuting crimes against children to protect vulnerable community members.

In November 2019, Snyder created at least nine sexually explicit images of a minor victim using his cell phone. These images depicted the victim in a naked state, and one image showed Snyder’s hand. He later distributed these images online.

The illegal activity was discovered in December 2021 when Yahoo submitted a CyberTip to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The tip contained 25 images of child sexual abuse material, including the nine images of the minor victim. The images were sent from a Russian-based email service under the subject header “Trade.”

GPS data confirmed that the images were created near Snyder’s residence in Cannon County. The cell phone used for creating the images was later disposed of at a recycling kiosk by Snyder, according to his statement following his arrest.

Upon completion of his prison sentence, Snyder will be on supervised release for life. The investigation was conducted by Homeland Security Investigations, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, and the Woodbury Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Monica R. Morrison.
