Safe Practices for Valentine’s Day Celebrations

Tips for a safe and romantic Valentine's Day celebration.

Valentine’s Day is known for its romantic gestures, candlelit dinners, and special moments. However, the Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department emphasizes the importance of prioritizing safety to prevent potential fire hazards during this celebration.

Here are some fire and life safety tips to keep in mind:

**Candle Safety**: Always blow out candles when leaving a room or going to bed. Never leave them unattended, and ensure they are placed away from flammable items such as curtains, bedding, and decorations. Consider using flameless LED candles as a safer alternative.

**Safe Cooking**: If you are preparing a romantic dinner, remain in the kitchen while cooking and avoid leaving stovetops unattended. Keep flammable materials, such as dish towels and paper products, away from the stove.

**Electrical Hazards**: Before use, inspect all decorative lights and electrical cords for any damage. Avoid overloading outlets and unplug decorations when they are not in use.

**Escape Plan**: Ensure your household has a fire escape plan, and everyone is familiar with the procedures to safely evacuate in case of an emergency.

**Fire Extinguisher**: Keep a working fire extinguisher handy, especially in the kitchen, and know how to use it properly.

The romantic ambiance created by candlelight can also present a fire risk. Brian Lowe, MFRD Fire Marshal, stresses the importance of candle safety during Valentine’s Day. “Candle safety is a top priority, especially on a night where open flames are commonly used for ambiance,” said Lowe.

Statistics from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reveal that 36% of home candle fires start in bedrooms, although only 13% of candle users report using them there regularly. Bedrooms contain highly flammable materials, such as bedding and curtains, making them particularly vulnerable. Candle fires result in an estimated $374 million in property damage annually and cause over 800 injuries or deaths.

To ensure your romantic evening remains safe, always practice candle safety and take necessary precautions.
