Nashville Prepares for Potential Snowstorm

Nashville prepares for a potential snowstorm with NDOT's comprehensive response plan.

The Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure (NDOT) is gearing up for a potential winter weather event that could affect Nashville and Davidson County starting this evening. Current weather forecasts predict that the region may experience 1-4 inches of snow, with the area under a Winter Storm Warning.

In preparation for the expected snowfall, NDOT crews have been actively pre-treating approximately 2400 miles of primary, secondary, and post-secondary routes with a brining solution since Monday morning. Once the pre-treatment is completed, the crews will shift to loading salt onto trucks, ready to deploy as soon as the snow begins to fall later tonight. NDOT crews will operate in 12-hour shifts to ensure the roads are cleared as quickly as possible.

Mayor Freddie O’Connell has advised residents to stay informed about the weather conditions over the next few days, highlighting the importance of patience as NDOT works to clear roads. “Our last snow event demonstrated the effectiveness of expanding our plow routes by an additional 800 miles,” Mayor O’Connell stated. “However, each winter storm presents unique challenges, and the anticipated low temperatures on Thursday and Friday may complicate road clearing efforts.”

Diana Alarcon, Director of NDOT, assured the community that the department is fully prepared to handle the winter weather. “We have 40 snowplow trucks ready to ensure the safety of first responders and public transit operations,” Director Alarcon explained. She also urged residents to give the crews ample space to work and to exercise caution if travel is necessary during snowy conditions.

NDOT has recently updated its snow removal primary and secondary routes to enhance efficiency and coverage across the county. The department will utilize a post-secondary list instead of call-in requests for this winter season. Residents can still report non-emergency issues affecting Metro Nashville streets via hubNashville for data collection and future response planning.
