City officials will gather at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, to celebrate the completion of accessibility improvements at the Cal Johnson Community Center located at 507 Hall of Fame Drive in Knoxville. The upgrades include a new wide, flat, and fully accessible sidewalk that connects the community center, picnic area, playground, and basketball courts, as well as a set of stairs linking the courts to the community center parking lot.
These enhancements aim to facilitate access for individuals with mobility limitations, addressing the difficulties posed by a previously steep grassy slope. The basketball courts, known for their unique and colorful designs, were revitalized in 2020 by former Lady Vol legend Candace Parker in collaboration with the 2K Foundations. The courts feature vibrant murals and inspiring quotes from notable Knoxvillians, including Lady Vols Coach Pat Summitt and poet Nikki Giovanni.
The construction project was managed by Design and Construction Services Inc. The City of Knoxville remains committed to ensuring meaningful access to its programs, services, and activities, complying with Civil Rights Title VI and ADA Title II laws.
