TSSAA Board of Control’s January 2025 Meeting Recap

The TSSAA Board discussed contracts and agreements for future sports championships.

The TSSAA Board of Control held its first meeting of 2025 in Hermitage on January 16th. During the meeting, several contracts and agreements for upcoming fall sport championships were deliberated and voted upon. Efforts are currently in progress to renew contracts with Chattanooga to host girls’ soccer and football events. Additionally, an agreement has been finalized for Knoxville to host the 2025 Cheer and Dance competition.

The Board approved Sevierville’s proposal to host the state golf tournaments in 2025 and 2026 and agreed to Murfreesboro’s offer to host the state volleyball tournaments for the same years. Memphis was awarded the cross country bid for 2025-2026, with plans to rotate the event to Middle or East Tennessee in 2027-2028, assuming comparable logistical and financial terms.

Updates on the Student Services program and the formation of the new Student Advisory Committee were presented. This committee will include a diverse range of students and student-athletes from member schools across the state, serving as ambassadors and ensuring student perspectives are considered in TSSAA governance. The focus will be on issues impacting student-athletes, providing feedback on regulations, contributing to special initiatives, and promoting a positive image of student-athletes.

Financial reports concerning golf, volleyball, girls’ soccer, cross country, cheer and dance, and the football playoffs were reviewed. Three schools requested exceptions to the co-op rule. J. Frank White Academy’s request to form a baseball co-op with Cumberland Gap High School for the 2024-2025 school year was approved. Independence Academy received approval for a girls’ soccer co-op with Glencliff High School for the 2025-26 school year, contingent on Glencliff’s acceptance of postseason ineligibility. Hillsboro High School’s request to host more than one school in a lacrosse co-op for a single year was also approved.

Appeals from Blackman, Manassas, and Kirby High Schools concerning disciplinary actions from recent athletic contests were denied. For more detailed information about the meeting, you can view the full summary in the Board of Control Summary (January 16, 2025) (PDF).
