Tennessee Releases 2023-24 ACT Results and Participation Data

Tennessee sees increased ACT scores and high participation rates for the 2023-24 class.

The Tennessee Department of Education announced the ACT state results and participation rate for the 2023-24 graduating class. The report highlights a 99% participation rate, attributed to efforts by schools and districts to encourage students to take the test. The statewide average composite ACT score rose from 19.0 in 2023 to 19.3 in 2024, indicating improvements in college and career readiness.

The state supports students through programs like the ACT Senior Retake program, allowing public high school students to attempt the test twice without charge. The data, now available on the department’s Data Downloads webpage, reflects each student’s highest ACT score.

Commissioner of Education Lizzette Reynolds acknowledged the importance of the ACT in supporting students’ future aspirations, emphasizing the collective effort to improve scores across the state.

Key findings include:

– 78 districts (61%) reported a 99% or higher participation rate in 2024.

– The average ACT composite score increased for Black/Hispanic/Native American students (16.6 to 16.8), economically disadvantaged students (16.3 to 16.6), and students with disabilities (14.7 to 14.9).

– 37.7% of the 2024 cohort met the ACT benchmark, scoring at least a 21, with notable improvements among minority and disadvantaged groups.

District-specific highlights revealed:

– 127 districts (98%) met a 95% participation rate.

Williamson County Schools led in students meeting the ACT benchmark (78.7%), followed by Germantown Municipal Schools (71.8%) and Maryville City Schools (67.3%).

– Significant growth was observed in Oneida Special School District (22.6%), Millington Municipal Schools (15.6%), and others in the percentage of students meeting the benchmark.

Progress was also noted in various student groups across districts:

Tullahoma City Schools saw an 18.5% increase among Black or African American students.

Oak Ridge Schools reported an 18.7% increase among Hispanic students.
