Temporary Closures on Market Street for Demolition

Demolition of Pryor Brown Garage prompts temporary street and sidewalk closures.

Starting Monday, January 6, there will be temporary closures of streets and sidewalks in downtown to facilitate the demolition of the Pryor Brown Garage. The century-old, four-story brick structure, located on a city block bordered by Gay Street, Cumberland Avenue, Market Street, and Church Avenue, has been vacant and without a roof for a number of years.

E. Luke Greene Co. has been granted a permit to carry out the demolition. Most of the block currently serves as a surface parking lot, with the vacant garage fronting Church Avenue.

During the demolition process, Market Street will be closed between Cumberland Avenue and Church Avenue. Additionally, the eastbound lane on the south side of Church Avenue will also be closed at a later stage. The sidewalks on the east side of Market Street and the south side of Church Avenue adjacent to the garage will be inaccessible, though sidewalks on the opposite sides of the streets will remain open.

The demolition crew is scheduled to start clearing out the garage on January 6, leading to the complete closure of Market Street between Cumberland and Church. The lane and sidewalk closure on Church Avenue is expected to begin around January 13.
