Starting Monday, January 6, 2023, downtown street and sidewalk closures will begin as crews prepare for the demolition of the Pryor Brown Garage. E. Luke Greene Co. has received a permit to demolish the century-old, four-story brick structure, which is currently vacant and in disrepair, having been without a roof for several years.
The garage is located on a city block bordered by Gay Street, Cumberland Avenue, Market Street, and Church Avenue. Presently, most of this block serves as a surface parking lot, with the vacant garage situated along Church Avenue.
To facilitate the demolition activities, Market Street will be closed between Cumberland Avenue and Church Avenue. Additionally, the eastbound lane on the south side of Church Avenue will be closed in the later stages of the project.
The east-side sidewalk on Market Street and the south-side sidewalk on Church Avenue, adjacent to the garage, will be closed. However, sidewalks on the opposite side of both streets will remain accessible.
The demolition process will commence with the clearing out of the garage starting Monday, January 6. A complete closure of Market Street between Cumberland and Church will begin on the same day. The closure of the Church Avenue lane and sidewalk is expected to start around January 13.
