TDOT to Expand S.R. 99/New Salem Hwy to Five Lanes

TDOT plans to expand a segment of S.R. 99/New Salem Hwy to five lanes by 2025.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has announced plans to open all five lanes of traffic on S.R. 99/New Salem Hwy, between Old Fort Parkway (S.R. 96) and near Interstate 24, by January 17, 2025. This development is part of Phase II of TDOT’s ongoing S.R. 99/New Salem Hwy widening project. This phase aims to widen a 1.4-mile section of the highway from Old Fort Parkway to Middle Tennessee Blvd., increasing the road from two lanes to five lanes near I-24.

Even after the lanes are opened, there will be intermittent lane closures and shoulder closures to complete remaining tasks, such as final paving for roadway smoothness and utility relocation. Following Phase II, Phase III of the project will begin, focusing on widening the road from Cason Lane to Veterans Parkway from two and three lanes to five lanes. The bidding process for this phase was completed in October, and construction is slated to commence in early 2025.

The entire project spans approximately seven miles but does not include the section within the I-24 interchange, as that area was previously widened under a separate initiative. Phase I, which covered a 2.0-mile stretch from Cason Lane to I-24, was completed in September 2021. The project is divided into three phases due to its size.
