The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) is now accepting applications for the first round of solid waste materials management grants for this year. These grants are available to communities and other eligible entities throughout the state. Applications for Waste Reduction and Organics Management grants will be open from February 28 to April 11. They are available to municipalities, counties, and not-for-profit entities. Additionally, Technical Assistance grants are available from February 28 to March 28 for Development Districts to provide free assistance with annual solid waste reporting and grant activities for all municipalities and counties. More grant categories will become available in the upcoming weeks.
The Materials Management Grants Administration Program, part of TDEC’s Division of Solid Waste Management, aims to support local communities in reaching their solid waste and recycling goals. This can help local governments reduce landfill waste through infrastructure upgrades and offer residents convenient recycling options. Recycling has a direct impact on Tennessee residents and manufacturers who utilize recycled materials.
Grants will be provided in four other categories: Convenience Center, Used Automotive Fluid Collection Center, Household Hazardous Waste Collection and Facility Operations, and Recycling Equipment, along with a Recycling Rebate for the top five counties. The grant application calendar is as follows:
– Waste Reduction and Organics Management Grants: February 28 – April 11 at 4:30 p.m.
– Technical Assistance Grants: February 28 – March 28 at 4:30 p.m.
– Convenience Center and Used Oil Grants: May 15 – June 30 at 4:30 p.m.
– Household Hazardous Waste Collection and Facility Operations, Recycling Equipment, and Recycling Rebates: September 4 – October 15 at 4:30 p.m.
(All deadlines are in Central Time.)
All grant applications must be submitted online via the department’s Grants Management System (GMS). Additional information about the TDEC grant program for solid waste materials management is available online.
The Waste Reduction grants are authorized by the Solid Waste Management Act of 1991 and are funded by the Solid Waste Management Fund, which TDEC administers. This fund receives revenue from a state surcharge on each ton of solid waste disposed of in landfills. Used oil grants are authorized under the Used Oil Collection Act of 1993 and are supported by the Used Oil Collection Fund, which is funded by a fee on every quart of oil sold.
TDEC will also conduct a series of grant workshops throughout the state, starting on January 17 at the Southwest Tennessee Development District and on March 5 at Montgomery Bell State Park. For workshop registration, please visit the Grants Administration website.
