In Sumner County, Mike Brown is a familiar and respected figure, known for his extensive service in public education. Often recognized in local grocery stores by former students as “Coach Brown,” he reflects on his multifaceted career in education, particularly around Hendersonville and Sumner County. Brown has held numerous roles, including basketball coach, middle school principal, and athletics director.
Though he retired less than a year ago, Brown’s contributions continue to be acknowledged. He has been named one of the 10 recipients of the TSSAA Distinguished Service Award for the 2024-25 academic year. Brown recalls the lasting relationships he has built with students over the years, such as Kerry West, a former player who became an All-American at Belmont and later served as Brown’s assistant coach before taking over the Hendersonville team for 18 years.
Brown’s career spans 20 years as a junior high and high school basketball coach, 13 years as a track coach, and two decades as a classroom teacher in subjects like physical education and science. His administrative experience includes serving as a middle school principal and athletics director.
After retiring full-time in 2017, Brown continued to work part-time as the Sumner County Athletics Director, a role in which he was named Athletic Director of the Year by the Tennessee Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association. Brown explained that his role filled a crucial gap at the district level, overseeing athletics and contributing to the growth of middle school sports.
The Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) commends Mike Brown for his enduring impact on education and athletics in the community.
