The Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFMO) is raising awareness about burn prevention and home fire safety during National Burn Awareness Week, observed from February 2-8, 2025. This year’s theme, “Burn Prevention Starts Where You Live,” emphasizes practical measures to minimize burn hazards in various areas of the home such as kitchens, bathrooms, sleeping areas, and storage spaces.
Carter Lawrence, Tennessee State Fire Marshal and Department of Commerce & Insurance Commissioner, highlighted the increased risk of home fires during the winter season. He urged Tennesseans to prioritize safety indoors to prevent both painful burns and dangerous home fires.
Supporting this initiative, Assistant Commissioner for Fire Prevention Mike Bell encouraged residents to review their home fire escape plans and ensure the presence of functional smoke alarms. For those in need of smoke alarms, assistance is available through local fire departments participating in the “Get Alarmed, Tennessee!” program or the SFMO, which can be contacted online here.
During Burn Awareness Week, several safety tips are provided to help reduce burn risks:
– Prevent spills by using the back burner and turning pot handles away from the stove’s edge.
– Keep appliance cords coiled and away from counter edges.
– Use dry oven mitts or potholders and replace any that are worn out.
– Open food containers slowly and away from the face to avoid steam burns.
– Opt for prepackaged soups with a wide base or pour into a bowl after heating to prevent scald burns.
– Avoid microwaving baby formula or milk to prevent uneven heating.
– Maintain a “kid-free zone” of 3 feet around cooking areas to protect young children.
– Refrain from holding a child while cooking or carrying hot items.
These precautions are designed to help families stay safe from burns and fires in their homes.
