Murfreesboro Fire Department Achieves Full Staffing

Murfreesboro Fire Department is fully staffed following a significant pay increase.

The Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department (MFRD) in Tennessee has announced that it is now fully staffed, which enhances its ability to provide efficient fire and rescue services to the Murfreesboro community. This development follows a significant pay increase approved by the Murfreesboro City Council in the 2025 budget. Firefighters’ salaries were increased from approximately $6,000 to $12,000 annually as part of a wider initiative to support public safety responders.

Assistant Chief of the Training Division, Nicole Miller, expressed gratitude towards the city council for their support, stating that the pay raises had a positive impact on staffing levels. The new salary structure includes $56,883 for new fire recruits, $58,305 for certified firefighters, $59,763 for firefighter AMT-B, $61,257 for firefighter AEMT, and $67,616 for Firefighter Paramedics.

As Murfreesboro continues to grow, maintaining a fully staffed fire department is crucial to meet the community’s increasing needs. In 2024 alone, MFRD responded to 20,894 incidents, averaging 1,800 calls per week. Miller emphasized the advantages of being fully staffed, noting that having more personnel on the scene improves the response to emergencies such as house fires, hazardous material releases, and medical calls.

MFRD operates 11 fully staffed fire stations, along with an administration building, a fire rescue community risk reduction division, a logistics and supply office, and the Doug Young Public Safety Training Center. Firefighters work 24-hour shifts, allowing them to efficiently complete training, perform routine checks, and manage operations.

For the first time in many years, MFRD will not hold a spring recruit class, allowing the department to focus on existing shifts and providing further support to current firefighters. Typically, MFRD accepts applications for firefighter positions at least once a year, including opportunities for experienced professionals through lateral hiring. The minimum qualifications for applicants include being at least 18 years old, having a high school diploma or GED equivalent, possessing a valid driver’s license, and passing a pre-employment physical.

The City of Murfreesboro offers all necessary firefighter and medical training, including Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) training, while recruits earn pay and benefits.
