Murfreesboro Council Approves Intersection Improvement Contract

Murfreesboro City Council approves contract for Burnt Knob/Manson Pike intersection enhancements.

The Murfreesboro City Council has approved a construction contract for improvements at the Burnt Knob/Manson Pike intersection. The decision, made on January 16, 2025, involves a $4,865,978.05 contract with Hawkins & Price, LLC, the lowest bidder. The contract is currently pending legal review.

The intersection improvements come in response to a traffic impact study prepared for the Rutherford County School Board. The study, provided to the City in 2024, highlighted “unacceptable delays” expected due to the construction of two new Rutherford County schools in the area. A new County elementary school is under construction on Baker Road, near the intersection, and is projected to open by August 2025, with a middle school planned in the future.

Chris Griffith, Public Infrastructure Executive Director, noted that the improvements are necessary due to the area’s growth and increased traffic volumes. The planned enhancements include widening each approach to add left turn, right turn, and through lanes, as well as installing a traffic signal to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion.

The contract allows for a 5 percent contingency to address any unforeseen requirements, ensuring timely project completion. Previously, on April 11, 2024, the Council approved a $413,500 professional services contract with Kimley Horn, Inc. for the intersection’s design. This contract covered various services, including project management, environmental studies, and final design services.

The intersection upgrade is part of the City’s 2040 Major Transportation Plan, with construction costs covered by FY21 and FY25 CIP funds. Further details can be found on the Murfreesboro city website at www.Murfreesborotn.gov.
