Murfreesboro Approves Veterans Park Construction Contract

Murfreesboro City Council approves $16.35M contract for Veterans Park construction.

The Murfreesboro City Council has approved a construction contract for a new community park, set to be built on the west side of the city. The decision, made on January 30, 2025, involves a $16.35 million contract with Moody Excavating, LLC, for the development of the 153-acre Veterans Park. This project will include open space for additional city services and features a $107,000 alternate project and a 5 percent owner’s contingency. Notably, the contract is $8 million less than the initially projected cost by the designer.

The park will be located along Veterans Parkway, near the I-840 interchange, and will feature a playground, event spaces, natural areas, walking trails, and pickleball courts. The main entrance will be on Veterans Parkway, leading to a parking area with access to various amenities. Secondary parking will be available for the nearby Cloister subdivision.

Mayor Shane McFarland expressed enthusiasm for the project, which aims to enhance recreational opportunities in the city’s growing west side. The development aligns with Murfreesboro’s reputation for parks and greenway spaces, serving nearby residential areas like the Berkshire subdivision.

The park’s planning began with the City Council’s approval of Master Planning services with Gresham Smith in July 2023, following a Request for Competitive Sealed Proposals. In 2023, Murfreesboro finalized a land exchange with Middle Tennessee Electric to acquire the park’s site. Rezoning has been completed to accommodate the park and other community uses.

Moody Excavating was selected after submitting the lowest bid among five contenders. The contract is pending legal review, alongside other approvals given on January 30 for additional projects, including upgrades at Old Fort Park and Patterson Park Community Center.
