CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Motorists traveling on Interstate 24 in Hamilton County should be prepared for potential traffic disruptions due to scheduled utility work. Beginning tonight and continuing nightly through Friday morning, utility crews will be closing the inside lane of I-24 from mile marker 177 to mile marker 183, spanning from Moccasin Bend to Germantown Road. These closures will be in effect from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Eastern Time.
The purpose of the lane closures is to facilitate necessary repairs to the interstate lighting system. The work will occur in both directions of the interstate, although not simultaneously. Drivers should exercise caution in the area and anticipate possible delays. Appropriate signage will be installed to guide drivers through the work zone.
It is important to note that the work is contingent on favorable weather conditions. In the event of inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances, the work may be rescheduled. Uniformed police officers will be present to assist with traffic control and ensure safety.
Motorists are encouraged to stay informed about traffic conditions and plan their routes accordingly. It is advised to check travel conditions before departure. For the latest updates on construction activities, drivers can visit the TDOT SmartWay Map or call 511 for statewide travel information.
Additionally, drivers are reminded to adhere to the Move Over Law, enacted in 2006, which requires vehicles to move over for stopped emergency vehicles. Violating this law in Tennessee can result in up to 30 days in jail and a maximum fine of $500.
