In Jackson, Tennessee, five members of the Hoover Criminal Gang have been sentenced for their involvement in racketeering and firearms-related crimes. Markell Young, a leader within the gang, received a 15-year prison sentence for orchestrating the murder of a suspected rival gang member. Young, along with Octavius Ferguson, 27, and Jordan Powell, 25, were convicted following a trial. Two other members, Bakari Lenon, 25, and Monterio Ross, 29, pleaded guilty in the case.
The defendants were part of a subset of the Hoover Criminal Gang known as the 83rd or Eight Tray, which was involved in a range of criminal activities, including murder, robbery, and drug trafficking. Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Brent S. Wible emphasized the impact of gang violence on communities and reiterated the Justice Department’s commitment to prosecuting those who engage in such criminal activities.
Acting U.S. Attorney Reagan Fondren for the Western District of Tennessee highlighted the collaborative efforts of law enforcement in bringing the gang members to justice, ensuring the community’s safety. Special Agent in Charge Joe Carrico of the FBI Nashville Field Office and ATF Special Agent in Charge Marcus Watson also praised the joint efforts to dismantle violent gang networks.
The convictions relate to an incident on January 31, 2017, when the defendants murdered a suspected member of the rival Gangster Disciples gang in Humboldt. Young ordered the attack, carried out by Ferguson, Powell, Lenon, and Ross, who shot through the victim’s open front door. This act led to promotions for the shooters within the gang.
Ferguson and Powell were sentenced to life in prison for their roles in the murder, while Lenon and Ross received 30-year sentences. The case was investigated by the FBI and ATF, with assistance from state and local law enforcement, and prosecuted by the Criminal Division’s Violent Crime and Racketeering Section and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Tennessee.
