Fatal Shooting in Murfreesboro: Baby Killed, Mother Injured

A dispute over loud music led to a fatal shooting in Murfreesboro.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – On January 27, 2025, a tragic incident occurred in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, resulting in the death of a one-year-old and injuries to the child’s mother. Detectives from the Murfreesboro Police Department Criminal Investigations Violent Crimes Unit have identified the cause of the incident as a dispute over loud music.

The suspect, Marquavious Hampton, 24, from Chapel Hill, reportedly became agitated due to loud music played by the mother, leading to a verbal and physical confrontation. Following the altercation, Hampton shot the one-year-old child, who was seated in a stroller. The mother, attempting to protect her child, was shot in the hand. The child was pronounced dead at the scene, while the mother was transported to a hospital for treatment.

The shooting took place at the Chelsea Place Apartments on Bradyville Pike on January 26, just after 2:30 p.m. Utilizing the MPD Real Time Crime Center License Plate Reader cameras, crime data analysts obtained a tag number for Hampton’s vehicle, a white Dodge Charger, and issued a BOLO (Be On The Lookout). The Williamson County Sheriff’s Department was alerted when Hampton entered their jurisdiction. After a brief pursuit, Hampton was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is looking into this incident.
