Driver Charged with Vehicular Homicide in I-40 Crash

Delmas Wiseman arrested after fatal crash on I-40 near Bellevue.

The driver involved in a fatal crash on I-40 West near the Bellevue Newsom Station exit has been arrested. Delmas Wiseman, 45, was driving a Buick sedan eastbound on August 18 when he lost control of the vehicle, crossed the median, and collided with a motorcyclist traveling in the westbound lanes. The motorcyclist, identified as 30-year-old Jacob Rhea, died at the scene.

Rhea’s 3-year-old daughter, who was not in a child safety seat in the back of the Buick, was transported to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, where she later died. Two other children, aged 5 and 6, were also taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Investigators from the Traffic Unit found that Wiseman applied the brakes for only one second and did not make any attempts to regain control of his vehicle before entering oncoming traffic. Based on these findings, four warrants were issued against Wiseman, including two counts of vehicular homicide by recklessness and two counts of child endangerment.

Wiseman was arrested on Sunday morning and is currently held in jail with a bond set at $70,000.
