The Nashville Police Department emphasizes the importance of securing vehicles to prevent thefts, specifically highlighting the need to lock car doors, secure valuables, and remove keys. This advisory comes in response to a troubling statistic: 873 guns have been stolen from vehicles in Nashville this year, with 16 incidents occurring just last week. These thefts account for 73% of all reported gun thefts in Davidson County in 2023.
To address this issue, the MNPD initiated a special operation on February 1 aimed at reducing vehicle theft and related crimes. This initiative has led to 994 arrests, the recovery of 531 stolen vehicles, and the retrieval of 221 guns. The police department warns that stolen firearms and vehicles often become tools for further criminal activities, including carjackings and robberies.
