Updates on State Capitol Access Changes

New access routes to the State Capitol will be implemented due to construction.

The State Capitol is undergoing a series of changes as part of Phase 3b of the War Memorial and Legislative Plaza Closure Plan. A significant update involves the closure of the Motlow Tunnel, scheduled for December 30, 2024. This closure will bring about several alterations in access routes around the State Capitol this month.

One of the most notable changes is the introduction of a new temporary stairway at the corner of MLK Boulevard and Eakin-Weakly. This stairway will serve as the primary access point to the Capitol, replacing the current Motlow Tunnel entrance and the existing exterior stairs. The location of this new access point is indicated by a green arrow on the attached map.

Key dates for these changes include the commencement of construction on the temporary stairs near the Sam Davis statue on December 2. On December 16, the parking lane on the west side of 6th Avenue will be closed. Following the removal of the Christmas tree, fencing will be installed around the Motlow Tunnel on December 30, which also marks the closure of the north (westbound) lane of MLK Boulevard adjacent to the tunnel. These closures are highlighted in red on the attached map.

All visitors and staff are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the new temporary stairway location at the corner of MLK Boulevard and Eakin-Weakly, as it will become the main route to the Capitol from the Tennessee Tower starting December 30, 2024. However, the exterior routes from the east and north will remain accessible.

For any queries or further information regarding these changes, individuals are advised to contact Tenant Services within the DGS’s STREAM division. The cooperation and patience of everyone involved are appreciated during this construction period.
