The Tennessee Department of Education has announced the recipients of the 2024-25 Principal of the Year and Supervisor of the Year awards. The announcement was made during the annual Excellence in Education celebration held in Nashville. These awards recognize outstanding leadership and contributions to the educational success of teachers and students across the state.
Kelley Harrell, principal of John Adams Elementary School within Kingsport City Schools, has been named the 2024-25 Tennessee Principal of the Year. Harrell is known for her dedication to teacher development through professional growth opportunities and personalized coaching. Her leadership aims to inspire educators to reach their highest potential, thereby enhancing the educational experience for students.
Expressing her excitement, Tina Francis, the 2023-24 Tennessee Principal of the Year, praised Harrell’s strong leadership, commitment to her school community, and her well-deserved recognition.
Cathy Pressnell, serving as the coordinator of reading for grades 3-6 in Murfreesboro City Schools, has been recognized as the 2024-25 Tennessee Supervisor of the Year. Pressnell’s efforts in creating effective literacy plans have significantly improved classroom work and student learning outcomes. Her leadership is focused on fostering teacher development to promote reading success for all students.
Arlette Robinson, the 2023-24 Supervisor of the Year, congratulated Pressnell for her dedication to education and the positive impact she has made.
The celebration also highlighted Principal and Supervisor finalists from Tennessee’s three grand divisions. Christie Amburn from Loudon Elementary School was named East Grand Division Principal of the Year, Tera Brooks from Prescott South Middle School received the Middle Grand Division honor, and Sharonda Rose from Rivercrest Elementary School was recognized as the West Grand Division winner.
In the Supervisor category, Dana Yost from Bradley County Schools was named East Grand Division Supervisor of the Year, Mick Shuran from Manchester City Schools received the Middle Grand Division title, and Leighann Horne from McKenzie Special School District was recognized for the West Grand Division.
Additionally, the department announced the state finalists for the 2024-25 Recognizing Inspiring School Employees (RISE) award. Teresa Lawson from Hamblen County Schools and Tina McCracken from Bradley County Schools are set to compete for the National RISE Award.
