Tennessee Colleges Collect 111,000 Items in Food Drive Challenge

Tennessee colleges gather over 110,000 food items in annual charity event.

Tennessee’s community and technical colleges recently concluded the 26th Annual Food Drive Challenge, amassing a total of 110,851 food items and cash donations. These contributions are set to benefit campus food pantries and local food programs aimed at assisting students and community members in need. Initiated in 1999 by the Student Government Presidents Council, the annual event encourages friendly competition among colleges to collect the most donations, with cash contributions equating to two food items per dollar.

This year’s challenge saw participation from 23 colleges across Tennessee. Roane State Community College led the Tier 1 category for community colleges with 6,108 items, while Pellissippi State Community College topped Tier 2 with 49,470 items. Among the Tennessee Colleges of Applied Technology, TCAT Hartsville, TCAT Henry Carroll, and TCAT Northwest emerged as winners in their respective tiers.

Donations support campus food pantries and community food banks, with ongoing contributions accepted through the College System Food Pantry Campaign. Beyond the food drive, Tennessee’s colleges engage in various charitable initiatives, such as adopting angels from the Angel and Giving Tree programs and organizing toy and supply drives for local children and families.

Efforts to address food insecurity among students are a key focus, with the Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC) highlighting the academic impact of this issue. Additional resources and information are available on the THEC website. The College System of Tennessee, governed by the Tennessee Board of Regents, serves approximately 140,000 students across its institutions.
