Sumner County Awarded $20,000 for Brownfield Redevelopment

Sumner County receives funding for redevelopment through a state grant program.

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) has awarded a $20,000 grant to Sumner County as part of the Brownfield Redevelopment Area Grants (BRAG) program. This funding is aimed at assisting the county in collaboration with the Greater Nashville Regional Council to identify and prioritize sites for redevelopment. The grant is one of 36 issued across the state, announced in July, to support brownfield redevelopment initiatives.

BRAG grants are funded through the Rural Brownfield Redevelopment Investment Act, which aims to protect the environment while creating economic opportunities, particularly in rural areas. This legislation provides local governments and development boards with essential resources for the investigation, cleanup, and redevelopment of properties that are blighted or underutilized due to potential contamination.

Brownfields are properties that are often vacant or not fully used due to the possible presence of hazardous substances. Redeveloping these sites helps to minimize risks to public health and the environment while encouraging economic growth and investment in the area.

The Greater Nashville Regional Council, established by the Tennessee General Assembly, serves as the regional planning and economic development organization for 13 counties across Middle Tennessee. The council will work alongside Sumner County to ensure effective utilization of the grant for site identification and redevelopment efforts.
