The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) has awarded Robertson County a $20,000 grant from the Brownfield Redevelopment Area Grants (BRAG) program. This funding will support the county’s efforts to identify and prioritize sites for redevelopment in collaboration with the Greater Nashville Regional Council. The grant is part of a larger initiative, with 36 similar grants distributed across the state as announced in July.
The BRAG program is funded through the Rural Brownfield Redevelopment Investment Act, which aims to protect the environment and foster economic growth, particularly in rural areas. This legislation provides local governments and development boards with essential resources for the assessment, cleanup, and redevelopment of properties that are currently vacant or underutilized due to potential contamination.
Brownfield sites are often left unused because of concerns about environmental contamination. By addressing these issues, the remediation process helps to reduce public health and environmental risks, while also encouraging economic development.
The Greater Nashville Regional Council, established by the Tennessee General Assembly, acts as the regional planning and economic development organization for 13 counties across Middle Tennessee. The partnership with Robertson County will focus on identifying key sites for redevelopment, aiming to transform these properties into valuable community assets.
