Beginning December 3, 2024, motorists should prepare for traffic disruptions at Old Salem Road due to a new box culvert installation. This project, conducted by the city’s contractor, Rollins Excavating, aims to improve drainage and lower the risk of flooding in the area. As a result, Old Salem Rd. will be closed to through traffic just south of Constantine Dr. for several weeks. The construction involves placing a 12-foot by 4-foot cast-in-place box culvert at the site, which lies near Puckett Creek, an area prone to high water levels and flooding during heavy rains.
Residents along Old Salem Rd. will maintain access from either side of the Constantine Dr. intersection, with appropriate traffic controls and detour signs in place. The new culvert will ensure that Puckett Creek can pass under Old Salem Rd., reducing the frequency of high-water events and minimizing traffic disruptions on Old Salem Rd. and Constantine Dr.
While Constantine Dr. will remain open, right turns from Old Salem Rd. onto Constantine and left turns from Constantine onto Old Salem will still be possible. The need for this upgrade was identified by city staff and the developer of the Bellemore subdivision during considerations for annexation and rezoning. Engineering firm Chastain Skillman completed the watershed study and culvert plans, and Volkert and Associates are updating the flood study for Puckett Creek to assist in future planning and regulations.
