Men and women in Davidson County with warrants for non-violent crimes, such as failure to appear in court, have an opportunity for a fresh start at the Nashville Safe Surrender 2024 event. This two-day initiative will occur on Friday and Saturday at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, located at 2021 Herman Street. The event will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
The event encourages individuals to take responsibility for their actions, offering them a chance to receive favorable consideration for surrendering. Participants may be able to return home the same day after speaking with an attorney and appearing before a judge from either the Criminal or General Sessions Courts, all taking place at the church. Importantly, there are no religious requirements for participation.
Juvenile Court staff will also be present to assist with outstanding child support issues, and the Metro Action Commission will accept applications for utility payment assistance. Additionally, representatives from the Urban League will provide job placement assistance.
Chief John Drake emphasized the value of the event, particularly as it helps reduce family stress by addressing outstanding warrant issues before the holidays. Reverend William Harris, pastor of Galilee Church, expressed his support and readiness to welcome participants seeking a new beginning.
The Safe Surrender event for 2024 is the result of extensive planning and will transform the church into temporary courtrooms and offices for attorneys and clerks. Community volunteers will assist throughout the event, and the Sheriff’s Mobile Booking Unit will process individuals before they appear in court.
Previous Safe Surrender events at Galilee Church have been successful, with last December’s event seeing 156 participants. Thirty-four individuals received special consideration to resolve their criminal charges, and all were able to return home the same day. In 2022, 56 individuals addressed a total of 76 outstanding warrants, and in 2021, 67 individuals with 88 warrants were able to resolve their issues at the event.
