Nashville Celebrates National League of Cities Centennial

Nashville officials commemorate the 100th anniversary of the National League of Cities.

December 12, 2024, marks the centennial anniversary of the National League of Cities (NLC), an organization dedicated to supporting city, town, and village leaders in their governance efforts. In November, Vice Mayor Angie Henderson and several Metro Council Members from Nashville participated in the NLC’s Centennial Summit held in Tampa, Florida. Council Member Kyonzté Toombs contributed as a panelist on Integrating Racial Equity and Transforming Communities with Municipal Bonds, while Council Member Terry Vo received the prestigious “Centennial Under 40 Impact Award.”

Founded in 1924, the NLC is the largest association representing municipal governments in the United States, advocating for over 19,000 cities, towns, and villages. The organization collaborates with state municipal leagues to enhance local leadership, drive innovation, and influence federal policies affecting local entities. Vice Mayor Henderson emphasized Nashville’s long-standing involvement with the NLC since 1958, highlighting the benefits gained through research, federal advocacy, and shared learning opportunities.

Nashville has hosted several NLC events, including the annual City Summit in 2019 and the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials Summer Conference in 2022. In May 2024, the NLC’s Centennial Roadshow visited Nashville, where city leaders presented a proclamation to the NLC at the National Museum of African American Music. Looking ahead, Nashville is set to host the NLC City Summit in 2026, with planning already in progress.
