The City of Murfreesboro is showcasing significant developments and initiatives in the latest edition of “In the City,” a monthly news program airing on CityTV and other city platforms. This December, the program highlights the Mercury Park project, a new affordable housing initiative for low-income residents. This project is supported by the City’s Community Development HOME grant funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Additionally, the Tennessee Recreation and Parks Association (TRPA) held its annual conference in Murfreesboro, drawing professionals together to discuss advancements and collaborative efforts in recreation and parks management.
In a nod to history, a new downtown historical marker at 126 South Maple Street commemorates the ‘Mink Slide,’ an important Black Business District located at South Maple and Vine streets. Michael Linn White reports on this initiative led by the African American Heritage Society of Rutherford County to preserve and share African American history.
The program also covers the Daylighting Town Creek Project, updates from the Citizens Fire Academy, and the introduction of Engine No. 5 at the Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department Station 5.
Furthermore, the city is conducting a special census campaign, “Count Me In,” to ensure an accurate population count, which has economic and tax benefits. Residents can participate in the census through www.murfreesborocensus.com.
