Murfreesboro Launches “Count Me In” Special Census

Murfreesboro conducts a Special Census to verify population and secure state funding.

The City of Murfreesboro has initiated a Special Census campaign titled “Count Me In” to verify and certify its population. This effort is crucial for ensuring accurate population data, which directly impacts the city’s allocation of State-shared revenue. Residents should expect census response forms in their mail. Hard copies are available at City Hall, and the form can also be completed online at www.Murfreesborocensus.com.

The Special Census mailers are being distributed to all households in the city, requesting the address and the first and last names of all residents. Responses can be submitted electronically or via a pre-paid postage card included in the packet. Parents with children attending Murfreesboro City Schools have received additional information through the Peachjar portal.

To encourage participation, the city is offering incentives such as Amazon Gift Cards. The first winner has already been announced, with more winners to be drawn during the campaign.

The current official population, based on the 2020 federal census, is 152,769. However, the city estimates an increase of approximately 20,000 residents due to new residential permits and net migration. An accurate count is essential for the city to secure its full share of State-shared revenue, which amounts to about $175 per resident. This funding supports vital services such as police, schools, fire, parks, and roads.

Mayor Shane McFarland emphasizes the importance of the Special Census and assures residents that the process is safe, easy, and confidential. The information collected is solely for census purposes and will not be shared externally, except for official purposes with the Boyd Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Tennessee Knoxville.

Special Census letters are also being sent to specific housing locations, including MTSU on-campus housing, nursing homes, and homeless shelters. Additionally, the Murfreesboro Fire and Rescue Department will conduct door-to-door campaigns to ensure all households are counted.

For further information or questions about the Special Census, residents can contact the city via email at [email protected] or by calling 615-893-5210. More city news is available online at www.Murfreesborotn.gov.
