The Tennessee Department of Transportation has announced that the Market Street Bridge in downtown Chattanooga will undergo its quarterly testing and maintenance on Sunday, December 8, 2024. The bridge will be closed to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic from 8:00 a.m. EDT to no later than 8:00 p.m. EDT during this period.
The maintenance work is contingent upon weather conditions. In the event of adverse weather or unforeseen circumstances, the testing and maintenance will be postponed and rescheduled. Motorists are advised to utilize the Olgiati Bridge or the Veterans Bridge as alternative routes while the Market Street Bridge remains closed.
Drivers are encouraged to stay informed by using all available motorist information tools and to check travel conditions prior to departure. The Tennessee Department of Transportation advises against tweeting, texting, or using cell phones while driving. For the latest updates on construction activity and traffic, travelers can visit the TDOT SmartWay Map or call 511 for statewide travel information.
Additionally, drivers should be aware of the Move Over Law, which was enacted in 2006. Violating this law in Tennessee can result in penalties of up to 30 days in jail and a maximum fine of $500.
