Eddie Martinez, a 31-year-old man, faces multiple charges including false imprisonment, theft of a vehicle, and two counts of evading arrest after driving off with a woman’s car from a Waffle House parking lot at 556 Donelson Pike in Nashville. The 34-year-old victim, an employee at the Waffle House, recognized Martinez as someone she knew from high school but had not seen in years. Martinez got into her car and claimed he needed it to “get away.” Despite the victim’s attempt to dissuade him by entering the passenger side, Martinez drove off with her inside.
The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD) coordinated with robbery detectives to track the vehicle using the victim’s cell phone. The car was located and followed as it traveled into Rutherford County, where Smyrna Police Department officers attempted a stop. Martinez fled, resulting in a collision with a Smyrna police vehicle. He continued driving back into Davidson County, ignoring the victim’s pleas to be let out, and finally entered Wilson County.
Police officers from Mt. Juliet and deputies from the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office successfully deployed spike strips to stop the vehicle on Mt. Juliet Road near I-40. Martinez was taken into custody and admitted during an interview that he took the car because he believed people were “after him,” displaying signs of paranoia according to the victim.
Martinez is currently held on a $47,500 bond. He has a prior conviction from 2012 for aggravated robbery and aggravated kidnapping.
