The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) has presented Lawrence County with a $20,000 check as part of the Brownfield Redevelopment Area Grants (BRAG) program. This funding is intended to assist the county in identifying priority sites for redevelopment. The grant is one of 36 awarded across the state as announced in July.
BRAG grants are funded by the Rural Brownfield Redevelopment Investment Act, which aims to protect the environment and foster economic growth, particularly in rural areas. This legislation provides local governments and development boards with essential resources for the investigation, cleanup, and redevelopment of properties that have fallen into disuse or are underutilized due to potential contamination.
A brownfield, by definition, is a property that may be vacant or not fully utilized because of the presence or potential presence of environmental pollutants. Remediation of these sites not only reduces the risk to public health and the environment but also encourages economic investment by transforming blighted properties into valuable community assets.
