Drivers commuting on Interstate 40 in Putnam County, Tennessee, should prepare for a temporary lane closure due to road maintenance activities. The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has announced that I-40 will be reduced to one lane from Exit 267 to Exit 275. This lane reduction is scheduled for Tuesday, December 10, 2024, to Wednesday, December 11, 2024, between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm Central Time, as crews work on drain cleaning.
The scheduled work depends on the weather, and any adverse weather conditions or unforeseen issues may lead to rescheduling the maintenance to a later date. Uniformed police officers will be on-site to help with traffic control and ensure law enforcement.
Motorists are encouraged to stay informed by checking traffic conditions before starting their journey. It is advised to avoid distractions such as tweeting, texting, or talking on cell phones while driving. For the latest updates on construction activities and traffic conditions, drivers can use the TDOT SmartWay Map (TDOT SmartWay Map) or call 511 for statewide travel information.
Additionally, travelers should be mindful of the Move Over Law, enacted in 2006. Violating this law can result in penalties, including up to 30 days in jail and a maximum fine of $500.
