Increase in Gun Thefts from Vehicles in Davidson County

A significant number of stolen guns in Davidson County were taken from vehicles.

The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD) has reported a concerning trend in gun thefts within Davidson County. According to data, a majority of the firearms stolen this year have been taken from vehicles. Specifically, out of 1,226 guns stolen in 2024, 900 were taken from automobiles, accounting for 73% of all stolen guns in the area. Just last week, 22 guns were reported stolen from vehicles.

This trend is a slight improvement compared to the previous year, where by this time, 1,189 guns had been stolen from vehicles. In response to these thefts, the MNPD initiated a special operation on February 1st to address vehicle-related crimes. This initiative has led to 1,009 arrests, the recovery of 540 stolen vehicles, and the discovery of 224 stolen guns.

The MNPD emphasizes the importance of securing vehicles and advises residents to lock their car doors, remove keys, and safeguard valuables, particularly firearms, to prevent further thefts. Stolen vehicles, like stolen guns, are often used in other criminal activities, including carjackings and robberies.
