Hickman County Awarded $20,000 for Brownfield Redevelopment

Hickman County receives $20,000 grant for brownfield redevelopment from TDEC.

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) has awarded Hickman County a $20,000 grant from the Brownfield Redevelopment Area Grants (BRAG) program. This funding will assist the county in identifying priority sites for redevelopment efforts. This grant is part of a larger initiative, with 36 brownfield redevelopment grants announced across the state in July.

BRAG grants are supported by the Rural Brownfield Redevelopment Investment Act, which aims to protect the environment while also creating economic opportunities, particularly in rural areas. This legislation provides local governments and development boards with necessary resources for the investigation, cleanup, and redevelopment of properties that are considered blighted.

A brownfield is defined as a property that remains vacant or underutilized, often due to potential contamination concerns. The remediation of these sites reduces threats to public health and the environment while also encouraging economic investment in these areas.

Tennessee Allocates Loan for Jacksboro Water Infrastructure

Governor Bill Lee, alongside TDEC Commissioner David Salyers, announced a $242,500 loan for water infrastructure improvements in Jacksboro, part of $16.2 million in loans approved by the Tennessee Local Development Authority. This funding, under the State Revolving Fund Loan Program, aims to enhance Jacksboro’s wastewater treatment plant with favorable interest terms and partial principal forgiveness. The program provides communities with lower interest loans to address water infrastructure needs, distributing over $2 billion since 1987.
