As the New Year approaches, residents of Murfreesboro can look forward to celebrating with fireworks. To ensure safety and compliance, the city has outlined specific dates and times when fireworks can be used within city limits. On December 31, fireworks are permitted from 10 am to midnight. On January 1, they can be used from midnight to 1 am and again from 10 am to 11 pm. Public displays outside of these times are allowed only with a permit from the State Fire Marshal.
The City of Murfreesboro has established rules to regulate the sale and use of fireworks. It is illegal to sell fireworks to individuals under 16 years old, unless they present state-issued photo identification or are accompanied by an adult. Additionally, sales are prohibited to intoxicated or irresponsible persons.
Certain types of fireworks are banned for sale, use, or possession within the city. These include mortar fireworks with a tube diameter greater than 1½ inches, reloadable fireworks, and bottle rockets. Fireworks use is not allowed on private property without the owner’s permission, on public property, or within 600 feet of any church, hospital, or public school. Vendors must maintain a 22-foot distance from these locations.
The definition of “use” includes the location where a firework is lit or launched and where it lands. Fireworks cannot be discharged from or aimed at a motor vehicle, nor can they be aimed at a group of people.
Firework vendors in Murfreesboro are required to provide customers with a written list of permissible dates and times for firework use, as well as safety instructions suitable for the fireworks sold. For more information on the city’s firework regulations, you can view the City of Murfreesboro Fireworks Ordinance here.
