Cumberland Park Renamed to Wasioto Park

Cumberland Park has been renamed Wasioto Park by the Parks Board.

The city’s Parks Board has officially approved the renaming of Cumberland Park to “Wasioto Park,” reflecting the original Shawnee name for the Cumberland River. This decision was made unanimously during a regular monthly meeting of the Parks Board, following a request from the Indigenous Peoples Coalition.

To gauge public opinion, the Parks Department conducted a survey, which received a total of 236 responses. Of these, 88% were in favor of the name change, with 208 votes supporting the initiative and 28 votes opposing it. Public feedback was collected through various channels, including phone calls, letters, emails, and in-person discussions over a 30-day period.

The change of name is effective immediately, marking a significant step in recognizing and honoring the indigenous heritage of the area.
