Cheatham County Secures $20,000 for Brownfield Redevelopment

Cheatham County receives $20,000 for brownfield redevelopment from TDEC.

Cheatham County has been awarded a $20,000 grant from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) as part of the Brownfield Redevelopment Area Grants (BRAG) program. The county plans to utilize these funds in collaboration with the Greater Nashville Regional Council to pinpoint key sites for redevelopment. This grant is among 36 similar awards distributed statewide, which were announced in July.

The BRAG program is funded through the Rural Brownfield Redevelopment Investment Act, which aims to protect the environment while fostering economic development, particularly in rural areas. The act provides local governments and development boards with essential resources for the investigation, cleanup, and redevelopment of properties that have become blighted.

Brownfields are properties that remain vacant or underused due to potential contamination. The remediation process is crucial as it reduces risks to public health and the environment, while also encouraging economic investment in these areas.

The Greater Nashville Regional Council, established by the Tennessee General Assembly, functions as the regional planning and economic development organization for 13 counties in Middle Tennessee. Through this partnership, Cheatham County aims to effectively identify and rehabilitate priority sites, promoting both environmental and economic benefits.
