Motorists traveling on I-26 in Unicoi County should take note of a new traffic restriction affecting oversized vehicles. As of Wednesday, October 30, I-26 has reopened to all traffic, but vehicles that are overweight or wider than 10 feet are not permitted to use this section of the roadway. Initially, the restriction applied to vehicles wider than 12 feet, but a section of the bridge cannot accommodate 12-foot-wide trucks without risking damage to curbing and delineators.
Traffic on I-26 is currently reduced to a single lane between mile markers 39 and 40 in Erwin. While standard width and weight commercial vehicles can use this route, overweight and over-dimension vehicles must continue to follow the established I-81 and I-77 detour.
For the most current detour information, drivers should consult the TDOT Helene Recovery webpage. It is advised that drivers use all available motorist information tools to check travel conditions before departing. Additionally, drivers are reminded to refrain from tweeting, texting, or talking on a cell phone while driving.
