The annual “Tennessee Season to Remember” event will take place on December 5 at 5:30 p.m. CST at First Baptist Church in downtown Nashville. This event, now in its 22nd year, aims to honor and remember victims and survivors of homicide. It has been organized by state and local public safety officials in collaboration with the families of those affected by such tragedies.
Scheduled speakers include John DeBerry, Senior Advisor for Governor Bill Lee, and former First Lady Andrea Conte, who founded the event. This year’s keynote speaker will be Tennessee Highway Patrol Lieutenant Angelia Jeffers-Smith, who began her career in law enforcement after her sister Sandy Jeffers was tragically killed in 2003, just before she was to graduate from the University of Tennessee.
During the ceremony, families from across the state will hang ornaments on memorial wreaths to honor their loved ones. These wreaths will be displayed at the Tennessee State Capitol throughout the holiday season, which will be illuminated in purple as a tribute to homicide victims.
Pastor Travis Duke from Murfreesboro will provide a musical tribute. For those unable to attend in person, the ceremony will be livestreamed on First Baptist Church’s YouTube page.
The event is supported by several organizations including the Tennessee Board of Parole, Tennessee Department of Correction, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, and the office of Secretary of State Tre Hargett, among others. Victim advocacy group You Have the Power, the U.S. Attorney’s Office Middle District of Tennessee, and the Davidson County District Attorney General’s Office are also providing support for the event.
