Tennessee Community Colleges Launch Annual Food Drive

Tennessee colleges initiate food drive for campus and local community support.

Tennessee’s community colleges and Tennessee Colleges of Applied Technology (TCATs) have commenced their 26th annual Food Drive Challenge. This initiative aims to gather food and monetary donations to support campus food pantries and local food banks within their communities. The collection drive will run until December 6, with students, faculty, and staff actively participating in the process. Individuals who wish to contribute can donate food and cash at organized collection events or by contacting student support offices at their nearest community college or TCAT. Online donations can be made at this link, with the funds being allocated to the participating colleges.

The Food Drive Challenge was originally established in 1999 by the Student Government Presidents Council as a means to assist students and community members facing food insecurity. Over its 26-year history, the challenge has seen the collection of over 1.7 million food items and monetary donations converted to food items. In 2023 alone, 128,039 items were collected.

Dr. Heidi Leming, TBR Vice Chancellor for Student Success and Strategic Partnerships, noted that while everyone benefits from the challenge, the institution with the highest total, based on size and category, earns bragging rights. Food insecurity among students has been linked to diminished academic performance and increased stress levels, according to a report from the Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC). The report emphasizes that addressing food insecurity is a priority for the College System of Tennessee, which encompasses 13 community colleges and 24 TCATs.

The College System of Tennessee, governed by the Tennessee Board of Regents, serves approximately 140,000 students and acts as the state’s largest public higher education system. For more information on food assistance resources, visit the THEC’s webpage or the College System’s support page.
