Tennessee’s community and technical colleges have paid tribute to veterans, including students, faculty, staff, and alumni, by participating in Veterans Day activities across campuses statewide. A highlight of these celebrations was the awarding of the Chancellor’s Commendation for Military Veterans, an initiative begun in 2020 by Tennessee Board of Regents Chancellor Flora W. Tydings.
The Chancellor’s Commendation is a special recognition given based on nominations from each college’s president. Nominees can be students, faculty, staff, alumni, or community members who are veterans or active-service members who exhibit service, honor, courage, commitment, and integrity.
For 2024, there are 40 recipients of the Chancellor’s Commendation, representing each of the system’s 13 community colleges, 24 Tennessee Colleges of Applied Technology (TCAT), and the Tennessee Board of Regents system office. Pellissippi State Community College awarded three recognitions in honor of its 50th anniversary. The commendation is symbolized by a specially designed challenge coin, reflecting a long-standing military tradition.
Chancellor Tydings emphasized the importance of veterans and active-duty personnel to college communities, noting their valuable contributions to campus diversity. The system remains committed to providing support and services to veterans and their families, including educational benefits and employment transition programs. All 13 community colleges and 24 TCATs are approved for veteran educational benefits and comply with excellence standards for military-affiliated communities.
The 2024 honorees come from various military branches and serve in roles ranging from students to faculty and administrative staff. For more information regarding services for veterans and military families, individuals can contact their nearest community college or TCAT or visit the [Veterans and Military Families Support page](https://www.tbr.edu/student-success/veterans-and-military-families-support).
The College System of Tennessee, governed by the Tennessee Board of Regents, is the state’s largest public higher education system, serving approximately 140,000 students through its network of community colleges, colleges of applied technology, and the TN eCampus.
