Trinity Christian Academy (TCA) sophomore Logan Lott has been recognized with the NFHS Student-Athlete Award of Excellence by the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) and the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). Lott’s commendation comes after her quick response at the D2-A West Region Cross Country Championships, where she provided critical first aid to her teammate, Jackson Hawks, a freshman who collapsed during the race.
During the boys’ race, Hawks lost consciousness and stopped breathing. Lott, a varsity runner for TCA, was nearby and quickly responded to a bystander’s alert. She immediately administered chest compressions, successfully restoring Hawks’ breathing until emergency medical personnel arrived. Meet director Max Paquette praised Lott’s calm demeanor and effective action under pressure.
After being transported to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, Hawks was later released and is undergoing further medical tests to ascertain the cause of the incident. Hawks’ family has expressed their gratitude for Lott’s swift and confident intervention during such a critical moment.
Remarkably, after assisting her teammate, Lott went on to compete in her own race, achieving a personal record by improving her time by 70 seconds and finishing in 35th place. Besides her involvement in cross country and track, Lott is active in varsity soccer, bike racing, Bible study, Best Buddies, and student government.
Lott’s actions highlight the positive impact student-athletes can have beyond their sports. Her bravery and selflessness are a testament to the importance of sportsmanship and caring for others. Her example sets a standard for all student-athletes, demonstrating that participation in school sports offers a platform to embody and promote positive values within the community.
