The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD) is urging residents to take extra precautions when parking their vehicles during the holiday season. This advisory comes in light of a significant number of gun thefts from vehicles this year.
To date, 819 firearms have been stolen from vehicles in Nashville, with 16 incidents reported just last week. Overall, 1,119 guns have been stolen in Davidson County this year, with 73% of these thefts occurring from automobiles. This figure represents a 25% decrease compared to the same period last year, when 1,100 guns were reported stolen from vehicles.
In response to these thefts and related crimes, the MNPD launched a special initiative on February 1st, which has led to 950 arrests. Additionally, the initiative has resulted in the recovery of 508 stolen vehicles and 199 firearms.
Stolen vehicles, much like stolen firearms, are often used in further criminal activities, including carjackings and robberies. As part of their efforts to ensure safety, the MNPD stresses the importance of locking car doors, removing keys, and securing valuables—especially firearms—out of sight.
