On November 18, the Community Review Board (CRB) and the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) reached a significant milestone by approving a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This agreement outlines collaborative procedures for reviewing citizen complaints of police misconduct.
The CRB has been working towards developing effective methods for handling citizen complaints, but progress had been challenged by the absence of a formal agreement with MNPD. The newly established MOU represents a crucial advancement in achieving this objective by detailing specific procedures for receiving and processing complaints, reviewing investigations, sharing information, and making recommendations.
CRB Executive Director Jill Fitcheard expressed gratitude towards Mayor Freddie O’Connell and MNPD Chief John Drake for their support of the agreement. Fitcheard emphasized the importance of cooperation between the CRB staff and MNPD, highlighting their dedication to serving the community’s interests. The Board is committed to fostering better relationships with MNPD, and the MOU is designed to meet this challenge through practical procedures and collaborative spirit.
During an April CRB meeting, Mayor O’Connell encouraged both parties to work together to ensure the CRB’s success. CRB Chairperson Alisha Haddock stated that the adoption of the MOU is a critical step in ensuring transparency and accountability. The agreement formalizes their shared commitment to building trust within the community while upholding fairness and justice principles. It signifies ongoing efforts to create a more equitable system that prioritizes the concerns of Nashville residents.
The CRB is optimistic about its future partnership with MNPD and is eager to continue collaborating to enhance police accountability and community trust. The MOU agreement is currently with Metro Legal and will become a living document once filed with the Metro Clerk.
