Murfreesboro Takes Steps Toward Town Creek Daylighting

Gasoline tanks removed for Murfreesboro's Town Creek Daylighting project.

The City of Murfreesboro is moving forward with the Daylighting Town Creek project, an initiative aimed at unearthing the creek currently flowing in a culvert from Murfree Springs wetlands at Discovery Center to Cannonsburgh Village along NW Broad Street. In a significant step, engineering and environmental consultants from Griggs & Maloney supervised the removal of gas tanks along NW Broad Street during the week of November 18-22.

These tanks, remnants from a 1940s gas station, had been filled with sand in the 1970s and had accumulated rainwater over the years. Testing conducted a month prior revealed low petroleum levels in the water, well within the limits allowed by the State of Tennessee for directing rainwater into the sanitary sewer system for treatment. The removal of the sand-filled tanks posed a challenge due to their weight and took several days to complete.

Professional Geologist Donnie Sheumaker explained the process: “Once they get the tanks out, they’ll take all the backfill, which is the material around the tanks, out of the pit.” Subsequent sampling of the soil showed contamination levels below commercial cleanup thresholds, allowing the material to be returned to the excavation site.

The next phase involves demolishing the old Longhorn Liquor building in January 2025. Other structures along Broad Street were cleared over the summer to make way for the new linear, urban park. Construction on the daylighting project is expected to begin in February.

In preparation for the project, the Murfreesboro City Council approved the closure of a segment of Hickerson Drive to vehicular traffic in 2025, starting in the spring. This closure will facilitate the Town Creek daylighting project, which will create walking and biking trail connectivity from the Discovery Center and Murfree Springs to Cannonsburgh Village and the Greenway Trail System.
