Murfreesboro Man Receives 41-Year Sentence for 2020 Crime Spree

Joshua Hallmon sentenced to 41 years for a series of violent crimes in Tennessee.

Joshua Hallmon, a 29-year-old resident of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, has been sentenced to 41 years in federal prison. The sentencing was announced by Acting United States Attorney Thomas J. Jaworski for the Middle District of Tennessee. Hallmon was found guilty by a federal jury in August 2023 on all 12 counts related to a series of violent crimes committed in Murfreesboro and Franklin in July 2020.

Hallmon, along with co-defendants Charles Melvin Walker and Walter Lee Williams, was indicted by a federal grand jury in May 2021. The charges included multiple counts of Hobbs Act robbery, carjacking, kidnapping, and using a firearm during a crime of violence. Hallmon additionally faced charges for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. Walker and Williams had pleaded guilty to all charges against them before the trial, receiving 16-year sentences each in federal prison last year.

The crimes took place between July 6 and July 27, 2020. They included armed robberies at Twice Daily and Mapco gas stations in Murfreesboro on July 6 and July 23, 2020. On the night of July 26-27, 2020, the trio committed a series of crimes, including an armed carjacking and kidnapping in Murfreesboro, an attempted carjacking in Franklin, and another carjacking and kidnapping in Murfreesboro, during which Williams shot a victim in the face.

Acting United States Attorney Thomas J. Jaworski stated, “The defendant committed senseless and violent crimes against people apparently chosen at random. Today’s sentence keeps the community safe from the defendant for over four decades.” He also praised the prosecutors and law enforcement partners for their efforts in this significant case.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; the Murfreesboro Police Department; the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office; the Smyrna Police Department; the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department; the Franklin Police Department; and the Tennessee Highway Patrol. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Chris Suedekum and Rachel Stephens led the prosecution.
